LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

March 2023

The world-wide low flutes community is now more connected than ever! Though covid derailed our Festival in Japan in 2020, it did open the online door for us that now makes such an organization as the International Low Flutes Society (ILFS) possible. I have been thinking of forming such a group ever since the 2018 Low Flutes Festival. Though I did receive 14,000 (!) Festival emails, the esprit de corps and high quality performances, the premiers of new pieces, the wildly supportive audiences and excitement of making music together far outweighed my distress at the sight of my burgeoning mail box.

The tremendous success of the June 2022 online Low Flutes Festival superbly organized by Mariana Gariazzo made it even clearer to us both that Low Flutes are on the Rise and, that an in-person Festival somehow had to be part of any future plans. (humm… Low Flutes on the Rise – that phrase could be useful!)

Now that traveling has become normal, we are planning an in-person Festival in the Washington D.C. area April 12-14 2024. In preparation for that, we have now applied for tax-exempt status and are building up our membership. Opportunities for donations will be forth coming when the 501(c)3 becomes official. It costs $600 just to apply! You can see how expenses mount quickly.

To build a membership and generate some income, the ILFS will be offering a series of online workshops featuring our stellar Board members and covering such topics as Hot Tips for Low Flutes, Intonation, Improving Breath Control, Tone Development, sight-reading sessions, Meet the Composer, and, Alto – to Curve or Not to Curve. The first two workshops will be free and we hope at that time that people will consider becoming a member and even make a donation to help us pay for the upcoming Spring 2024 Festival. Workshops after the first two will have a tuition fee. Any membership in 2023 will be valid for the 2024 Festival.

Keep practicing and Go Low!
